Alvin's Graduation Shoot – Birmingham University

A few weeks ago we had an enquiry from Alvin who was looking for somebody to take some photos of him and some friends and family when he graduated from the University of Birmingham. We had only done one graduation shoot before but I was keen to do this one particularly as Alvin mentioned he liked my style of photography. That means he knows I may do more than the traditional shots that all the other photographers were doing that day. We took a bunch of family portraits using the university’s amazing architecture but it wasn’t long before I was looking for different angles and backgrounds to mix things up a bit.

Here are a few images we came back with…

We had to really didn’t we…? 🙂

Thanks to Alvin and Wilken for being so easy to work with. Congratulations and good luck with your chosen careers.

  1. Wish you’d been at my graduation, and then I wouldn’t be mortified every time I go into my mum’s lounge and see THAT picture!

Obviously the architecture is stunning and quite rightly, you’ve expressed the kudos of graduating from the uni, but I love that you’ve used the day to day to tell his story as well. The seminar room that you sat in, the smell of the refectory, the bus stop you waited at …. these are the things that register with an individual as their experience of an institution. By using the details of his surroundings, you’ve created images that will trigger memories for him for the rest of his life.

  2. Haha yes! We had to.. and the throw was awesome..

Thanks for the great pictures and hope to see you soon!

    Take care!

    Alvin
